The Beaux' Stratagem

On of the best known and one of the most revived Restoration comedies

The Recruiting Officer

Since its first appearance in i The Recruiting Officer i has remained a scathing satire of military recruitment George Farquhar knew the subject well since he had been involved himself in the tricks and intimidation that enlisted recruits for Queen Anne s army in the War of Spanish Succession from In Farquhar s play two recruiting officers compete for recruits in the same locale Recruiting in those years required more than patriotism and the lure of glory it relied on bribery alcohol and the whole armory of deceit Farquhar s play makes connections explicit further setting off their dramatic power by linking recruiting tactics to the rites of courtship His satire is intensified by his much admired portrayals of the characters and situations of rural life Farquhar brought the men and women of field and village truly to the stage

The Recruiting Officer and Other Plays

George Farquhar wrote some of the most accessible and exhilarating comedies in English He recorded with great frankness the brutality and the disorder of his age as well as its wit and vivacity In his tragically short life he had wide social experience moving between nobility country gentry university the theatre and the army He convincingly depicted fashionable London life and the more naive society of country towns veering between cynical acceptance of current sexual and class politics and a remarkably understanding view of women and the lot of the poor Under the General Editorship of Michael Cordner of the University of York the texts of the plays have been newly edited with modernized spelling and punctuation They are based on first editions but later textual changes are indicated to illustrate the fluid opportunism with which Farquhar responded to the needs of performance In addition there is a scholarly introduction and detailed annotation focusing on the resourcefulness with which Farquhar challenged and entertained his age
