Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

Perhaps the most important work of philosophy written in the twentieth century em Tractatus Logico Philosophicus em was the only philosophical work that Ludwig Wittgenstein published during his lifetime Written in short carefully numbered paragraphs of extreme brilliance it captured the imagination of a generation of philosophers For Wittgenstein logic was something we use to conquer a reality which is in itself both elusive and unobtainable He famously summarized the book in the following words What can be said at all can be said clearly and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence David Pears and Brian McGuinness received the highest praise for their meticulous translation The work is prefaced by Bertrand Russell s original introduction to the first English edition


Philosophical Investigations

Philosophische Untersuchungen is with the Tractatus Logico Philosophicus one of two major works by th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein In it he discusses numerous problems amp puzzles in fields of semantics logic philosophy of mathematics amp the philosophy of mind He asserts that conceptual confusions surrounding language use are at the root of most philosophical problems contradicting amp discarding much the argument of the Tractatus Logico Philosophicus The book is often considered one of the most important works of the th century continuing to influence contemporary philosophers studying mind amp language br The book wasn t ready for publication when Wittgenstein died in G E M Anscombe translated the ms amp it was published in It s now in a rd edition incorporating Anscombe s final revisions amp is repaginated There are two popular editions of Philosophical Investigations br Prentice Hall ISBN br Blackwell Publishers ISBN bilingual br The text is divided into two parts consisting of what Wittgenstein calls in the preface Bemerkungen translated by Anscombe as remarks In the st part these remarks are rarely more than a paragraph long amp are numbered sequentially In the nd part the remarks are longer amp numbered using Roman numerals In the index remarks from the st part are referenced by their number rather than page however references from the nd part are cited by page number The comparatively unusual nature of the nd part is due to the fact that it comprises notes Wittgenstein intended to reincorporate into the st Due to his death it was published as a nd part br Philosophical Investigations is unique in its approach to philosophy A typical philosophical text presents a philosophical problem summarizes amp critiques various alternative approaches to solving it presents its own approach then argues in favor of that approach This book treats philosophy as an activity rather along the lines of Sokrates maieutic method he has the reader work thru various problems participating actively in the investigation Rather than presenting a philosophical problem amp its solution he engages in a dialog where he provides a thought experiment a hypothetical example or situation describes how one might be inclined to think about it then shows why that inclination suffers from conceptual confusion

Written over the last months of his life amp inspired by his interest in G E Moore s defense of common sense this much discussed volume collects Wittgenstein s reflections on knowledge amp certainty on what it is to know a proposition for sure


The Blue and Brown Books

Peter Winch s translation of Wittgenstein s remarks on culture amp value presents all entries chronologically with the German text alongside the English amp a subject index for reference br It was Wittgenstein s habit to record his thoughts in sequences of more or less closely related remarks which he kept in notebooks throughout his life The editor of this collection has gone through these notebooks in order to select those remarks which deal with Wittgenstein s views about the less technical issues in his philosophy So here we have Wittgenstein s thoughts about religion music architecture the nature of philosophy the spirit of our times genius being Jewish amp so on The work is a masterpiece by a mastermind Leonard Linsky


Remarks on Colour

This book comprises material on colour which was written by Wittgenstein in the last eighteen months of his life It is one of the few documents which shows him concentratedly at work on a single philosophical issue The principal theme is the features of different colours of different kinds of colour metallic colour the colours of flames etc and of luminosity a theme which Wittgenstein treats in such a way as to destroy the traditional idea that colour is a simple and logically uniform kind of thing
